Descriptions
The Middlesborough Bridge on Voght Street in Merritt was washed out in the atmospheric River floods of November 2021. The City of Merritt, with funding assistance from senior levels of government, replaced the bridge using a progressive design build project delivery model.
BASIS Engineering were the prime consultant for the project, performing all the structural and geotechnical design. Specialist subconsultants were engaged for the civil, drainage and hydrotechnical aspects of the work.
The new bridge was designed to be more resilient with additional hydraulic clearance, extensive upstream riprap river training works, and pile supported piers and abutments. The single span 68.5 m long steel I-girder bridge utilized a unique design for the deck, using full depth precast concrete deck panels topped with a waterproof membrane and asphalt. The bridge has two traffic lanes, and a 4.4m wide Multi-Use Path for pedestrians and cyclists.
